Amazing Pumpkin Hummus Recipe

Last updated on May 19th, 2025 at 05:52 am

This creamy pumpkin hummus recipe is one of my new favorite absolutely delicious recipes. It is so simple and quick that I can have it done in 10 minutes and immediately serve it!

This is such an easy recipe that can be made when you need an easy dip in 10 minutes!

For years I have made my own homemade Hummus recipe that was a little different every time. Sometimes I would 2-4 cloves of garlic and see if it strong enough for me at the time. Other times I would add some extra tahini, olive oil or salt and see what it changed with the flavor learning a little more about what makes a hummus recipe taste good.

While traditional hummus recipes don’t add anything like pumpkin, I couldn’t help but try a seasonal pumpkin hummus take on the regular hummus I usually make.

That and being a not so secret pumpkin lover I couldn’t help but try adding pumpkin purée to the normally creamy hummus recipe.

Pumpkin Hummus Recipe Highlights

Hummus is one of my favorite dips to make, but since I am on a bender with anything pumpkin related I decided to try making pumpkin hummus. Which honestly surprised me with how good it is by just adding in some pumpkin puree into the mix.

I didn’t think pumpkin adds so much compared to normal hummus, but the pumpkin flavor and creaminess makes such a difference to it that I couldn’t help but be surprised.

This recipe is just becoming further proof to me that I think canned pumpkin puree is one of the best ingredients to add to almost anything!

Additional flavoring options

Adding in difference kinds of sugars to the pumpkin pie hummus recipe

Maple Syrup: You can add in a tablespoon of maple syrup gives the pumpkin hummus a great fall flavor tinge to the hummus.

Cayenne Pepper: Adding in half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper will add a nice bit of spice to the hummus recipe.

Smoked Paprika: Smoked paprika gives the hummus a woods, smoky flavor to the hummus.

Keep in mind the options above this might conflict, so choose two a see you it works. Also you can pour some into a bowl and add some of the flavoring options and see if you like them.

Roasted pumpkin seeds: These are garnished on top after the hummus has been mixed, but you can mix them into the hummus itself. Adding them to the recipe will increase the amount of time needed to blend the whole mix together, depending on how well you want the seeds mixed.

Sesame seeds: These are also garnished on top and add in a little bit more of a nutty flavor to the pumpkin hummus.

More Olive oil: This might seem ridiculous but adding just a bit more olive oil than the recipe directions makes the pumpkin hummus even smoother and creamier. Try adding another tablespoon of olive oil than the recipe asks for just after everything is mixed, just don’t add to much more olive oil or you will have to add some more garbanzo beans to even it out.

More Garlic: Don’t be afraid to add garlic if the hummus is too weak for you. Just be careful as some people can’t handle to much garlic, if there is too much it will completely overpower every other ingredient in the hummus. This also depended on if the garlic is fresh or not, garlic left in the fridge for a few weeks I find get’s weaker over time. So don’t be afraid to add half of another clove if the hummus doesn’t taste Garlicy enough for you. Just make sure you get a second opinion if possible.

Canned Chickpeas liquid: You can use the liquid in the can to adjust the creaminess and thickness of the pumpkin hummus, and since it has the flavor of the chickpeas it will add more of the chickpeas flavor back in if one of the ingredients become to strong.

Substitutions

Substituting the pumpkin puree

You can substitute the pumpkin puree with other members of the squash family with very little change in flavor.

Sugar pumpkin, butternut squash, acorn squash, delicata pumpkins, green pumpkins or even Hokkaido pumpkin. All of these will work fine as they all have the same nutrient profile.

In a pinch you can use pumpkin pie filling, but just keep in mind that you are adding sugar as well as all the pumpkin pie spices meant for pumpkin pie. So expect a shift in flavor.

Substituting the olive oil

You can safely omit the olive oil from the recipe, but it will be even more of a dip instead of a hummus. To replace it use a fatty component like a nut butter of some kind, almond butter or cashew butter work as well.

Even without the fatty component of this hummus recipe the flavor will still be very close to what the pumpkin hummus will taste like.

You could also add more tahini as it will act somewhat similarly but will make the Pumpkin hummus thicker and creamier.

Substituting Lemon juice

You can remove the lemon juice from the pumpkin hummus but it will be best to add some kind of sugary acid back to the hummus somehow.

We can do that by adding in one of a number of ingredients.

With things like lime juice, orange juice, vinegar, citric acid, white wine or grapefruit juice. Each of these will ad their own twist to the flavor, but all will work very well for substituting lemon juice.

Substituting the Canned Chickpeas

One option is to buy dried chickpeas in bulk and rehydrate them overnight with some salted water. Depending on you location it can be cheaper.

You can also use Pinto beans, white chili beans, great northern beans or white beans in place of chickpeas.

What to Serve with Pumpkin Hummus Dip

There are a number of great options, but here are a few.

Pita chips or Pita Crackers: This are great for this hummus recipe. They are firm enough to hold up during dipping and when you take a bit out of them as well.

Fresh vegetables: Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, sliced apples with all of these the vegetables can’t help but taste good!

Tortilla chips: While they aren’t as durable as pita chips or vegetables, you can buy them in most grocery stores and have them ready in a pinch when any company arrives.

How to store Pumpkin Hummus

Pumpkin Hummus will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. It will also freeze for up to 3 month if you pour a tablespoon of olive oil over it before you freeze it, also in a airtight container.
