Apple pie is a classic, especially a homemade apple pie recipe there is nothing quite like it. This recipe is a simplified recipe with less ingredients making the process that much quicker.

This is my favorite apple pie recipe. It is so much faster and easier than many other recipes I have seen, while also keeping that best aspects of homemade apple pie!
What Makes a Good Apple Pie Recipe
The type of apples and the quality of the apples makes a huge difference. Along with the spices adding that wonderful warm flavor that makes homemade apple pie so special.
How Long Does Apple Pie Take?
If you have precut the apples and already have pie dough ready to go it will be very quick. Those two process take the most amount of time when making homemade apple pie.
How much Apple pie filling do I need?
I find that 7-9 medium sized Granny Smith apples work best, but depending on the apples 7-9 would be enough for two pies.
There are so many recipes of apple pie what makes this one so good?
Most recipes I see add too much sugar when coating the apples. When really the spices should do most of the work giving the pie flavor.
Apple pie is best with a small side of vanilla ice cream anyways so in my opinion too much sugar overpowers the overall flavor making it far too sweet.
How do I keep the Sliced Apples from Browning?
Before you cut the apples pour a cup of water and two tablespoons of lemon juice into a large bowl and stir when you add any sliced apples into the mix.
This won’t affect the flavor but will keep the apple slices looking good.
What Are the Best Apples for Apple Pie?
Granny smith: Green and tart, Granny Smith apples are the gold standard for apple pies. These hold up amazingly well after being baked.
Golden delicious: Sweet and yellow, these hold their shape as well when baking but are naturally sweet apples so you don’t need as much sugar when using them for apple pie.
Fuji: Fuji apples hold their shape, and are a good balance of sweet and tart flavor.
Honey crisp: Tart with a honey sweet flavor, crisp and juicy apples, they hold their shape when baking.
Jonagold: Between a Golden Delicious and a Johnathan. Jonagolds are both sweet and sharp with a great aromatic flavor. These hold up exceptionally well in the oven.
If you just want to use one of these kinds of apples for your pie these will work fine. But if you can mix and match a few of them for a deeper flavor as some of the apples accent each other.
What apples should I not to use for apple pie?
Red Delicious Apples These apples don’t cook well and will turn to mush.
What kind of Pie plate to use?
What about using a Glass pie plate? (maybe keep)
There are a number of options for pie plates, but my favorite is a thick glass one. With glass you can see if the bottom crust is done, and it heats up the pie slower. I always like having the top crust just a little bit extra crispy.
Metal pans work very well but depending on if it is steel or cast steel it will also cook perfectly fine. Aluminum pans will work fine for this recipe but make sure you use one of the more firm apples because of the higher heat transfer inherit within aluminum.
Apple Pie Ingredients

Apple pie filling
2 pounds of good baking apples, like Granny smith ,Fuji, Braeburn or Golden Delicious. You will need 7-9 apples depending on their size.
1 cup of brown sugar (loosely packed)
1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of allspice
1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
Pie crust recipe
2 3/4 cups of flour
1 cup of salted butter
1/2 cup of cold water
3 teaspoons of lemon juice
Directions
1. First we start on the pie crust we are going to start with the 2 and 3/4 cups of flour. This will give us some excess dough so if you want to do a lattice crust you can easily.

2. Next we will add the 1 cup of salted butter in small cubes.

3. Now we add the 1/2 a cup of ice cold. Also during this add in 3 teaspoons of lemon juice

4. Now stir the mixture until everything is mixed, but doing the least amount of mixing possible, because it will be tough if you mix it to much. Try squeezing some of the dough together and see if it holds together, if it doesn’t add a bit more water and mix a bit more. When it does the pie dough is done.

5. Now pour out the pie dough onto a clean lightly floured surface. Form the pie dough into a disc working it as little as possible, now sprinkle a little bit of flour on the disc and wrap in plastic wrap. Store it in the fridge for 1-2 hours as you slice the apples.
Apple Pie Directions
1. First preheat the oven to 375°F and start to peel and core the apples, place them in a larger bowl. You can also pour in a teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar with a cup of water to keep them from turning brown, but you will have to drain the liquid before spicing.

First we add the brown sugar to the apples.

3. Now we add the spices the ground cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. This amount of spices will give the homemade pie a nice flavor.

4. Now mix the dry ingredients and the apples thoroughly so the spices and brown sugar are coating the apples well.

Combining the Homemade Pie Crust and the Apple Filling
1. Bring the pie dough out of the fridge and separate half of the dough, we are going to roll it out with a rolling pin, thinning the dough down to about 3/8ths of an inch. Now spread it over your pie pan and gently push the dough down into the corners of the pan. Make sure the dough extends over the edge of the pie dish even just a little bit, this is required for later.
2. Now pour the pie filling into the filled pie dish making sure any juices don’t transfer into the pie dish. Use the rest of the dough and roll it out so it fits over the edges of the pie dish.

3. From here we take a sharp knife and cut the excess dough of the edges of the pie dish. Now press down on the edges of the pie to have the bottom and top crust connect. After this we need to cut some holes in the center of the pie to vent out the excess steam from all the liquid in the apples.

4. bake the pie for 25 minutes at the 375°F then reduce the heat to 350. Bake until the pie has a golden brown crust, the juices from the apples should be steaming out of the vent we cut earlier.

5. Let the apple pie cool until it is room temperature, then serve and enjoy.

How To Store and Freeze Apple Pie
Before you bake the pie you follow the recipe until you cut the steam vents into the crust. At that point you can freeze the pie after you tightly wrap the pie in plastic wrap.
To store a baked apple pie let it cool completely and wrap it in a few layers of plastic wrap. Now you can store it in the freezer for 3 months. When you are ready to serve the pie let it thaw at room temperature for a few hours.
